The two clubs account for 11 of the 23 nominees
The list of 23 players nominated for the 2012 Ballon d'Or was announced this Monday. It includes six Real Madrid players (Casillas, Ramos, Alonso, Özil, Cristiano and Benzema) and five Barcelona players (Piqué, Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi and Messi). Radamel Falcao (Atlético de Madrid) completes the names which represent Spanish clubs.
The reigning European champion, Chelsea, only contributes a single player to the list of 23, although he no longer plays at Stamford Bridge. It is none other than Didier Drogba, who now plays in the ranks of Shanghai Shenhua. Bayern, the runner-up, also only contributes one player: goalkeeper Manuel Nueuer.
Juventus, the Italian champion, provides the third keeper on the list in the form of Gigi Buffon, as well as Andrea Pirlo. City, the Premier League champion, is represented by Agüero, Balotelli and Yaya Touré, whilst its neighbouring team Manchester United offers Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
By country, Spain is the most highly represented with seven players, followed by Italy with three and Germany, Argentina and Ivory Coast with two.
