Barcelona have set to work on renewing the contracts of a number of their most important players, but some of their futures may not be settled until the end of the season.
First and foremost, they must arrange a new deal for Carles Puyol. The captain's contract expires next summer and the club want him to finish his career at the Camp Nou. There's no doubt he will not stay at the club, but the problem lies in agreeing to the number of years that the new deal will allow him to continue.
Another Barça veteran in need of a new deal is Xavi Hernández, who has less than two years left on his current contract. Like Puyol, both parties want to see a deal agreed to quickly, with the aim of the midfielder also playing out his final days as a Barça player.
The third player is Cristian Tello. He still has a trainee contract with the club, but the idea is for him to officially move up to the first team this season. The departure of Fontàs (on-loan to Mallorca) frees up a place in the squad, which Tello could take.
Last but not least is the new deal that awaits Leo Messi. Barça are believed to be interested in giving Messi, whose current deal runs out in 2016, a further two years, theoretically keeping him at the club until 2018, when he will be 31 years old.
