FC Barcelona, the current champions, and Real Madrid will kick off their 2012-2013 Copa del Rey campaigns against Deportivo Alavés and Alcoyano, teams from the Second B Division. They are expected to meet in the semi-finals.
The draw for the first four rounds of the knockout tournament, held at Las Rozas Football City (Madrid), gave Alcoy and Vitoria the jackpot, as the modest teams from these towns take on who are, from a financial point of view at least, the most desirable opponents.
Meanwhile, the other two Champions League teams, Valencia and Málaga, will take on Llagostera and Cacereño, whilst Atlético de Madrid will open its cup run in Jaén and last year's finalist, Athletic Club de Bilbao, will play a Basque derby against Eibar.
FC Barcelona returns to a historic stadium of the likes of the Mendizorroza, which has not received one of the big teams since Deportivo Alavés were relegated. The club is currently unbeaten (six wins and two draws) at the top of Group II of the Segunda B.
Real Madrid take on Alcoyano, currently fifth in Group III. The last visit to the Bernabéu brings back good memories for them. They beat Castilla 0-2 in the Second Division promotion play-offs.
