It's feared the Brazilian's absence will affect the team's results
Team Mou isn't quite the same without Marcelo. You could even go so far as to say that there is a degree of 'Marcelodependence', if we take a glance at Real Madrid's figures since José Mourinho has been manager. Without the Brazilian, the figures drop considerably. This is the outlook the current league champion faces for the coming weeks.
In the Mourinho era, Marcelo has played 132 official matches, with 110 victories, 13 draws and 9 defeats. On the other hand, the Brazilian has missed 26 games through suspension, injury or tactical decisions. On those occasions, the statistics point to 16 wins, 5 draws and 5 losses.
The percentages reveal a clear pattern. With Marcelo, the team's performance can be broken down as follows: 83% wins, 10% draws and only 7% defeats. By contrast, without Marcelo the figures go down to 61%, that is to say 22 points less. The number of draws goes up to 19% –almost double – and the defeats also rise to 19%.
In other words when Marcelo doesn't play for Real Madrid, the team's chances of losing more than doubles, shooting up from 7% to 19%. It's no wonder Mourinho is concerned.
Two matches stand out from two seasons ago, in which Marcelo didn't participate and that played a big part in Real Madrid losing the league that year: the visit to Pamplona (1-0 in favour of Osasuna) and the game against Sporting (lost 0-1 in the Bernabéu). And let's not forget Marcelo wasn't on the pitch when Real Madrid dropped points to Valencia in the first game of this season.
