ICU strips Armstrong of his titles"The ICU won’t appeal the USADA’s report and will strip him of the seven Tour de France titles. There’s no room for him in cycling", Pat McQuaid, the UCI president said.
The International Cycling Union (ICU) decided this Monday to ban U.S. cyclist Lance Armstrong for life and strip him of his seven Tour de France titles, thus ratifying the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) report which had accused him of doping and supplying banned substances to his teammates.
"The ICU won’t appeal the USADA’s report and will strip him of the seven Tour de France titles. There’s no room for him in cycling", Pat McQuaid, the ICU president said. "The message is that cycling has a future. This isn’t the first time cycling has reached a crossroads or that it has had to begin anew", McQuaid recalled.
The USADA published a report two weeks ago which implicated the US Postal team and the Texan in a sophisticated doping programme and the ICU had to decide whether to appeal this in front of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) or rule against the rider, which it finally opted to do.
In doing this, the ICU will strip Lance Armstrong of every title he’s won including the historical seven Tour de France titles he won between 1999 and 2005. Armstrong chose to not contest the USADA’s accusations.
