Barcelona won a crazy, crazy game against Deportivo at the Riazor (4-5). The Galician team gave the Liga leader a run for its money, but finally succumbed to the veritable display put on by Leo Messi, who scored three goals.
The Galicians were outplayed by Barcelona in the first half and the result at the break (2-4) looked about as good as the home team could hope for. Just when it looked like the goals from Jordi Alba on 3 minutes, Tello on 8 and Messi on 20 and 44 minutes would give Barcelona a comfortable victory at the Riazor, goals from Bergantiños in the 37th minute (with the help of Valdés) and Pizzi in the 27th minute (from a penalty that never was) and another in the 47th minute breathed life back into Deportivo. To make matters worse, Mascherano was sent off in the 49th minute and Depor started dreaming of a comeback.
An impressive goal by Messi on 78 minutes – putting him on three for the night and 11 in the Liga – gave Barcelona some room for manoeuvre, but a Jordi Alba own goal barely a minute later kept Depor in the running. Nevertheless, the final score ended at 4-5 and Barça remain at the top of the table.
