Xavi the Magnanimous

He donates 25,000€ for a social programme for children

Eight days ago he smiled as he picked up the Prince of Asturias Award for Sport together with his good friend Iker Casillas at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo. The accolade also carried a cash prize, which the Barça captain has decided to donate, in full, to a worthy cause. Specifically, the €25,000 he won – his half of the prize – will go towards a children's programme run by 'Obra Social La Caixa', the social welfare branch of Catalan bank "La Caixa".
This generous gesture from the Barcelona captain, who is also a key figure within the Spain squad, is very much in keeping with his character – he and many of his teammates have dipped into their pockets for charitable causes on many occasions.
Xavi's donation will go towards a programme that has been set up to help fight child poverty in his hometown of Terrassa. Xavi has been an 'Obra Social La Caixa' ambassador since January this year [see picture].
The money will help establish an educational support class for children at risk of social exclusion in the city, which is around 25 kilometres from Barcelona. The local association 'Can Palet' will be partnering with 'Obra Social La Caixa' on the project. Since it was launched in 2007, the programme to which Xavi is contributing has helped rescue more than 195,000 children from Catalonia and all over Spain from poverty.
