For most Real Madrid players, Wednesday's fixture at the Etihad Stadium will be a normal Champions League game, albeit one with qualification on the line.
For Cristiano Ronaldo, however, it is a derby. The Real Madrid star is going back to the place he once called home to face his former club's arch rival: Manchester City. While the United faithful will look back fondly at the Portuguese's time in England, the City fans will be sharpening their knives as they seek to ruffle the man who has often proved a thorn in their side.
After a stirring build-up, setting foot on the Etihad turf could be a rude awakening for Cristiano. The Portuguese flyer will have some special memories, but is certain to receive a hostile welcome and be the butt of much derision from the stands.
CR7 knows that winning on Wednesday night will kill two birds with one stone, delighting fans at Madrid and United alike. The latter are licking their lips at the prospect of their city rivals being bounced from the Champions League at the first time of asking for the second straight year.
Cristiano had a chequered record against City while in England. His ten matches against the Sky Blues yielded six wins, three losses and a draw, and, although he scored three goals, there were also two sending-offs in that time.
In addition, City was the opponent for Ronaldo's infamous reaction to Ferguson's decision to take him off, footage of which was beamed the world over. The events in question took place at Old Trafford on 10th May 2009 and were taken as the ultimate proof that Cristiano was Madrid-bound.
