Alberto Undiano Mallenco, an international referee with experience at the highest level, will be in charge of the derby between Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid.
The match will be played at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday 1st December in the 14th round of matches in the Liga BBVA. The man from the Navarra region of Spain was the top candidate, as previously reported by MARCA, and the news of his selection became official this Thursday.
Undiano Mallenco (Pamplona, 1973) has been an international referee since 2004 and he is amongst those who have been picked out by FIFA for the Brazil World Cup in 2014, together with Carlos Velasco Carballo. He has already participated at the 2010 South Africa World Cup.
This season he's been in charge of the Sevilla-Real Madrid game (1-0), played on 15th September at the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium, as well as the Galician derby between Celta and Deportivo (1-1) and the game between Valencia and Athletic Club de Bilbao (3-2), which were both played in October.
In the Champions League he called the shots for Kiev-Porto (0-0), on 6th November and Cluj-Manchester United (1-2) on 1st October. He also arbitrated the Italy-France friendly (1-2), on 14th November, and the Belgium-Croatia qualifier for the 2014 World Cup (1-1).
The Madrid derby looks particularly exciting this year because of the run of results Simeone's Atlético side has put together, and the great form of Radamel 'The Tiger' Falcao.
