Alonso prays for rain

As the last F1 race of the season draws ever closer, we are getting a clearer picture of the weather forecast, which has seen the probability of rain creep closer and closer to 100%.
Indeed, while heavy showers are a shoo-in tonight, there is an 80% chance of them continuing into the beginning of tomorrow's race. Even if the conditions do ease off, it is unlikely that the surface will be unaffected, notwithstanding any efforts that will be made to get the track into shape.
Although Vettel and Alonso have refused to comment on whether they are rooting for dry or wet conditions, the numbers do not lie, and the Ferrari driver has been in a different class in the rain this year.
In 2012's three "washouts" – in Malaysia, the UK and Germany – the Spaniard has notched up two victories and a second-placed finish, i.e. 68 points out of a possible 75, or 90% of the total tally up for grabs. He is followed by Kimi Räikkönen with 35 points, while Sebastian Vettel lies far adrift in third place, with 25.
Were this season's average in the wet to be carried over into Sunday's race, Fernando would be on course to pick up 22.5 points, compared to 6.25 for Vettel. This 16-point gap would be more than enough for Alonso to lift the title, as there are currently 13 points between the pair. Unfortunately for Ferrari, mathematical logic and Formula 1 don't always go hand in hand.
