Michael Ballack in Spanish court for reckless driving

Radar captured him driving at 211 km/h (131 mph)

On Wednesday, Cáceres Criminal Court number 2 will try Michael Ballack for speeding, after the former Germany captain was caught driving at 211 kilometres per hour (133 mph) on the A-5 highway in Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Cáceres) on 17th October.
The prosecution is pushing for the 37-year-old to be fined almost €10,000 and have his licence suspended for two and a half years. As no prison sentence was requested, Ballack could choose not to attend the hearing, with a lawyer and solicitor representing him in his absence, legal sources told Spanish news agency 'Efe'. Similarly, he could also decide not to turn up to his trial, despite being summoned to appear.
Since Ballack was driving more than 80 kilometres per hour faster than the limit of 120 km/h, his offence is legally defined as a crime, as outlined in the Spanish Criminal Code.
In the fast-track hearing held the day after Ballack was clocked at the speed in question, the former midfielder refused to testify and was accompanied by a duty solicitor, as his German lawyer could not be located.
The prosecutor involved in the fast-track trial stated that there is normally no problem reaching an agreement but, given the failure to do so, a second hearing was set for 31st October at Cáceres Criminal Court.
