Messi has 'Van the man' in his sights

Tito Vilanova regretted on Saturday that lately, whenever people talk about Leo Messi, they point to his statistics, whilst Tito would prefer they talk about what he brings to the team. What Messi is giving above all else is goals, which lead to Barcelona winning games and to 'La Pulga' breaking one record after another. In Moscow he has another one in his sights.
Messi has already scored 54 goals in the Champions League and is just two goals shy of the tournament’s second highest all-time goalscorer, Dutchman Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who scored 56. Ahead of both these players is Raúl with his impressive 71 goals.
Obviously, given the Barcelona striker's age, Raúl's record is under serious threat. Spartak is also a team he has a good record against. The Argentine netted twice in the game at the Camp Nou and Emery has admitted that there is no way or system to stop a player like him.
Messi, top goalscorer in La Liga with 17 goals, has scored three in the Champions League. He's been Europe's top goalscorer in the last four seasons.
As well as Van Nistelrooy's record, we mustn't forget that Messi is also hot on the heels of Gerd Müller. He's just seven goals shy of the 85 goals the German striker scored in 1972.
