Carles Puyol stayed behind in Barcelona and did not travel with the rest of the 19-man squad to Palma. The Barcelona centre back has yet to receive the medical all-clear, despite having trained normally alongside his teammates for the last two sessions.
The approach has changed after all of the injuries suffered this season. It is no longer a question of recovering as fast as possible, but doing so safely and taking the calendar into consideration. If the game against Mallorca was a final, Puyol would be there. However, it is November with a long way to go and the 34-year-old Catalan player has already suffered three injuries this season.
Vilanova made it clear the decision was a joint one: "If he came to me and said he was fully fit, I'd take him. But the three parties – the player, the physios and me – we've decided it's not in our best interest."
Puyol also has the advantage of knowing that there is no Champions League or cup game this week. The following game is against Zaragoza next Saturday. He has all week to train and get fit.
The player who did travel to Palma, after making his return in Glasgow, was Gerard Piqué. The Catalan centre back made the starting eleven for the first time since 19th September, when he was injured in the Champions League game against Spartak.
