For the second consecutive match, Jose Maria Callejón earned a start in Jose Mourinho's starting XI and despite not scoring, he delivered a superb performance in the 5-1 win over Athletic Bilbao at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.
From the outset, Callejón served notice that he would be a force against the Basques, starting in the eighth minute when he unleashed a powerful shot that Athletic goalkeeper Gorka saved. Eight minutes later, again Callejón had a good look at goal but was unable to capitalize.
However it was four minutes from halftime when Callejón showed his most impressive skill of the night by nearly volleying home after a delightful pass from Cristiano Ronaldo. The former Espanyol man hammered his right-footed shot only to see it bounce off the post and back into play.
Callejón continued to be active in the second half before he was finally substituted off in the 69th minute for Argentine Ángel Di María. As Callejón walked off the pitch, he received warm applause from the Bernabeu faithful and was given a congratulatory handshake by Mourinho for his efforts.
With his outstanding performance, Callejón could have very well earned himself more La Liga starts in the near future.
