The Catalans, who started with David Villa in the line-up alongside Pedro and Messi, found themselves up against a rival that attempted to play them at their own game and ended up on the losing end of the stick, although Barça's third goal shouldn't have been allowed as goal-scorer Jordi Alba was clearly offside.
Xavi, Iniesta, and Cesc, whose creative juices were flowing, gave Barça the edge. However Barça wasn't so solid in defence, as Vilanova had chosen to play the trio of Adriano, Mascherano and Alba at the back, none of whom are natural defenders.
Although Busquets got back to help out in defence, Celta's speed on the counter-attack shocked the fans in the Camp Nou into silence on numerous occasions. Lago Aspas, Celta's outstanding star, showed what a great player he is. Víctor Valdés had to make two brilliant saves otherwise the result might have been very different indeed.
Javi Varas also came to the rescue at the other end following the three frenetic minutes: Marcó Adriano put Barça ahead (21) but was taken off shortly after; Mario Bermejo (24) equalised following a counter attack; and Villa (26) started the move with a magnificent back-heel and finished a marvellous move with Iniesta.
Celta tried to find the equaliser in the second half, while Barcelona played Bartra in place of Cesc. Villa produced another back-heel that led to Alba scoring in an off-side position (61') and the Camp Nou was surprised when Messi failed to come up with a goal to dedicate to his new-born child, although it wasn't through lack of trying.
