Youngster Morata keeps Madrid afloat

MARCA.COM

After two weeks of controversy about the Real Madrid youth system, destiny would have it that a Castilla (Madrid B-team) player, Álvaro Morata, stepped off the bench to save José Mourinho's side with a late winner against Levante.
Real Madrid picked up three golden points but made heavy weather of the waterlogged surface. Mourinho's men were far from at their best, but did just enough to take home the spoils.
The rain and the poor state of the pitch dominated the headlines in the first half, with the ball held up in puddles at almost every stretch. Great conditions for water polo, but by no means easy to play football on.
Nevertheless, despite the playing surface, Real Madrid managed to pull ahead through Cristiano Ronaldo after 20 minutes. The Portuguese forward latched onto Xabi Alonso's free-kick with his thigh and rifled home to open the scoring.
An Ángel goal after 62 minutes drew the hosts level and threatened to rain on Mou's parade. From that moment on, Madrid went up a gear in pursuit of a winner, and Xavi Alonso spurned a perfect opportunity when his penalty was repelled by Uruguayan goalkeeper Munúa.
It was time for a last throw of the dice, and Mourinho promptly turned to Morata. It proved an inspired move, as Xabi turned from zero to hero with another superb set-piece delivery, leaving the youngster to glance home a header and seal a 2-1 victory in the 85th minute.
