Mou's puzzle

José Mourinho has an 11-player jigsaw that he can assemble with his eyes closed. The problem is that he's lost some of the pieces. With Marcelo out, he has no recognised left-back, and the experiments with Essien and Arbeloa filling in came up short. Now Coentrao is back, but given his past performances, it would be premature to hail him as the missing piece of the puzzle.
Should the Portuguese full-back return to the starting line-up, Arbeloa would shift back over to the right, where he is more at home, allowing Ramos and Pepe to resume their world-class partnership at the centre of defence.
Another absentee is Khedira, one of the key cogs in Mou's original design. None of the other pieces is quite the same. In the German's absence, square pegs are forced into round holes, meaning a perfect fit is nigh on impossible.
The strikers are the latest pieces of the master plan to fall by the wayside. There are various possible solutions to this issue. Mou could bring in Morata, or alternatively go with Cristiano up front, which would involve rejigging things elsewhere.
With Higuaín and Benzema ruled out of the Levante match, Morata and Callejón will both be gunning to plug the gap, although the likes of Kaká cannot be counted out either.
If Mourinho sticks to his traditional set-up, Morata would deputise in the striking role that is his birthright. The coach would get a load off his mind by replacing like for like.
If Cristiano is chosen to lead the line, someone else would have to step into the breach and play in the hole. Callejón looks best placed for such a role.
