Messi looks to 'torpedo' Müller's record

This evening Messi will start hunting down the record held by Gerd Müller, who was awarded the fitting moniker of 'Torpedo' back in his playing days. The German has the all-time record for goals in a calendar year, 85, from the year 1972, and nobody has looked capable of beating this feat for the last 40 years. Until Messi came along, that is, and he's currently just 9 goals away from equalling the record.
The Argentine supremo is demolishing any record that's put in front of him, and against Zaragoza he could take another step to achieving a record in 'La Liga'. He's just two goals away from matching Santillana, who scored 186 goals in the Spanish league and is the ninth highest scorer in the championship's history.
Of the 15 goals that Messi has scored in the league, 11 have come away from home, but Zaragoza seems to be a team he particularly enjoys playing against. In fact, Leo's scored 11 goals in the 12 games he's played against Zaragoza.
The 'Azulgrana' striker doesn't seem to be knocking them in one at a time either. He's got six braces and a hat-trick so far this season, and two goals is all he needs to catch Santillana.
Messi is the first name on the team sheet and he rarely seems to need a rest, but Vilanova dropped a hint that he might rest players who have played a lot of games in a row, which is Messi's case. Barcelona has to consider a crucial match in the Champions League next Tuesday, but Messi, who trained in the gym on Thursday, is training at his usual level and it'll be his manager who takes the decision today.
