Valencia remains in the hunt to finish top of Champions League Group F after putting Belarusian side BATE Borisov to the sword (4-2) in an action-packed encounter.
Bayern Munich, fresh off a ruthless 6-1 rout of Lille, will be the next visitor to the Mestalla, on 20th November. The two are in pole position to qualify out of the group, although BATE is still in the running. The Belarusian outfit excels at making the most of its opponents' slip-ups, even on occasions like this one, when Valencia was a cut above.
The deadlock was broken on 26 minutes when the BATE defence was caught napping and the Brazilian Jonas, nicknamed 'The Detonator', drove through the gap between two Belarusian defenders and coolly fired the ball past Gorbunov.
A second goal followed just three minutes later, this time from the spot, Radkov bringing down Mexican winger Guardado with an industrial challenge on the edge of the box. Soldado – who was fortunate not to be sent off after striking out at an opponent when the referee wasn't looking – stepped up to dispatch the penalty with aplomb.
The second goal brought more mistakes and more goals. Algerian forward Feghouli made it 3-0 to Valencia in the 51st minute from a Gago pass, after the Argentine had won back possession. The BATE comeback began through a Bressan free-kick from the right on 53 minutes, Bordachev ducking to put off Guaita in the Valencia goal.
Molevski briefly had the crowd biting its nails, striking on 83 minutes after a huge lapse from Gago. However, the Argentine soon made amends, setting Feghouli free to score his second and the last goal of the night three minutes later.
