Glorious goals help sweeten the proceedings

Copa del Rey / A breeze for Barça in Vitoria

Barcelona didn’t exactly put on a brilliant display but it was more than enough to topple Alavés, who are in the third division in its home stadium. The two first goals, scored by Villa and Iniesta, were truly fabulous, with Fábregas closing the scoring for Barça.
The goals were the real highlights of the evening. David Villa didn't disappoint and is finding his form by scoring goals in the few minutes given him. It took him 40 minutes to open the scoring, following a magnificent pass which he picked up in the middle of the box, controlling the ball perfectly before taking it round the defender and unleashing a shot that gave the Alavés keeper no chance.
In the 50th minute, Andrés Iniesta stroked the ball on the edge of the area and floated it over the keeper, who was slightly off his line. The ball went in off the woodwork and it was game over.
Fábregas put the result beyond any doubt in the 87th minute, effectively turning the return match in the Camp Nou into a dress rehearsal for the referee, the crowd and the sparring partner.
The only negative point of the night came when Pinto, the Barcelona goalkeeper, was hit by a coin thrown from the crowd.

La revanche des Blues

Chelsea retrouve Manchester United mercredi soir en seizièmes de finale de la League Cup, trois jours après une défaite au goût amer en Premier League face à ces mêmes Red Devils (2-3).

Le hasard du calendrier a voulu que Chelsea et Manchester United s’affrontent deux fois en trois jours, dans deux compétitions différentes. Mais il n’avait pas prévu le contexte tendu dans lequel les deux équipes vont se retrouver mercredi soir à Stamford Bridge, en seizièmes de finale de la League Cup. Trois jours après leur défaite en Premier League (2-3), les Blues n’ont toujours pas digéré la pilule de l’arbitrage sévère de Mark Clattenburg, qui les a réduits à neuf avant d’accorder le but de la victoire à un Javier Hernandez pourtant en position de hors-jeu.

Ses décisions ne seraient pas ses seuls torts puisqu’il a été accusé par certains joueurs londoniens – à commencer par le milieu nigérian John Obi Mikel – d’avoir proféré des insultes racistes à leur égard à l’issue du match. Une plainte contre lui a même été déposée par Peter Herbert, un avocat qui souhaite que les joueurs noirs du championnat soient réunis au sein d’une même association, auprès du Metropolitan Police Service, qui enquête par ailleurs sur cette affaire en collaboration avec Chelsea et la fédération anglaise (FA).

Si les Red Devils n‘ont rien à voir dans cette histoire, ils doivent tout de même s’attendre à un accueil hostile dans une rencontre qui, habituellement, n’aurait pas rameuté les foules. Car vu le calendrier infernal imposé à ces deux clubs, la League Cup n’est clairement pas l’une de leur priorité. Le visage du onze que devraient aligner Roberto Di Matteo d’un côté (Turnbull - Azpilicueta, Cahill, Luiz, Bertrand - Romeu, Mikel - Moses, Mata, Marin - Piazon) et Alex Ferguson de l’autre (Lindegaard- Vermijl, M Keane, Wooton, Buttner - Nani, Powell, Fletcher, Scholes, Anderson - Welbeck) le prouve.

Championnat d'Italie

Petit vainqueur samedi contre le Genoa (1-0), l'AC Milan n'a pris qu'un point à Palerme (2-2). Mais le club lombard perdait 0-2 jusqu'à la 69e minutes. Il n'a gagné que trois matches sur dix disputés en Serie A
