Messi's 2012 goalscoring legacy

Nobody has ever scored more goals than Messi in a single calendar year. He's broken Gerd Müller's record and still has time to improve his tally, making it even more unattainable. His 2012 has been unique in the footballing world.

The Argentine was the league's top goalscorer (2011/12) with 50 goals, breaking a historical record set by Cristiano Ronaldo. He's scored 36 league goals this season, bringing his tally for this calendar year to 55 (Goals scored last season in 2012 plus those scored this season).
In the Champions League, he equalled the record of goals scored by a player in a single campaign, which stood at 14. So far this calendar year, he has scored thirteen, between those scored last season and this.
Based on his performances for his country, Argentina knows just how unique he is. He has scored a dozen goals in nine appearances for 'La Albiceleste' this year.
The one remaining question is how far can he go? In January, he could break yet another record by becoming the winner of the Ballon d'Or award for a fourth consecutive year.
Messi's 85 goals:
- League: 55 in 36 matches
- Champions League: 13 in 12 matches
- Spanish Cup: 3 in 7 matches
- Spanish Super Cup: 2 in 2 matches
- Argentina: 12 in 9 matches
