Cristiano breaks his record for goals in a calendar year

Cristiano Ronaldo did not want to miss the Champions clash with Ajax on Tuesday even though it was a dead rubber. Among his personal objectives for the season is to finish top scorer of the Champions League as he did back in 2008.
And he inched closer to that with his sixth goal of the current Champions League campaign. The Portuguese star had gone two matches without a goal but put that run to bed with an easy finish to open the scoring, after Karim Benzema had cleverly pulled the ball back to him. That goal made him top goalscorer of this season's competition, ahead of Messi, Buruk Yilmaz and Alan.
Ronaldo did not stop there and looked to add to his tally all evening, even when his side took its foot off the gas in the second period.
He tried his luck in particular from dead-ball situations, hitting four free-kicks in total without any luck, directly the opposite to what happened in last Saturday's derby against Atlético.
The strike against Ajax also meant Ronaldo broke his record for most goals in a calendar year. In 2011 he managed 53 goals at Real and a further 7 with Portugal to make it a round 60. This year he already has 61, including 5 for the national team, with games still to play.
