Former German international striker Gerd Müller paid tribute to Barcelona forward Leo Messi, after the Argentine recently broke Müller's record for the number of goals scored in a calendar year. The German's record of 85 goals, now one fewer than Messi, had stood since 1972 and he shared his delight for "the best player in the world".
"My record stood for 40 years, since 1972. I scored 85 goals in 60 games. Now the best player in the world has broken it. I'm delighted for Leo Messi", said Müller, who spent most of his career at Bayern Munich.
Müller, nicknamed 'The Torpedo', said that Messi was an "incredible player" and a "legend" in world football. "He's such a nice and modest professional and I think he'll get one or two more goals in 2012 and that he can then hold on to the record for the next 40 years", added Müller.
The former Bayern Munich and West Germany legend jokingly finished by saying: "He only has one defect and that is that he plays for Barcelona and not for Bayern".
